Description
The Makindu Handicrafts Centre has over 200 carpenters, apparently, who carve sculptures and utilitarian wooden items. The prices are very cheap compared to craft shops in kenya's urban centres. The items aren't displayed very well and the centre isn't particularly glamorous, but this is a good stop off point if you're driving between Nairobi and Mombasa.
The carpenters are very friendly and you can see them carving their bowls and sculptures under thatched huts. This isn't a big place, but there's also a rather scruffy cafe where you can get a cup of tea or soda.
